UNWIN BROS. LTD.

London City Interiors

Similar in style to Allenson’s City Churches and. using the same distinctive German printer, can be found several sets of City of London views which concentrate on interiors of buildings such as Lloyds, Guildhall, the Mansion House, various Inns of Court, Corn Exchange, Tower of London, etc.   Each card bears on the front the following imprint “Unwin’s Series” together with similar distinctive printer’s set reference numbers as previously noted on the Allenson cards; and on the back Unwin Bros. Ltd., 15 Queen Victoria Street, London E.C.

Unwin Bros Ltd were established in 1866 as a stationery and printing business and it was perhaps inevitable that in due course they should turn their hand to picture postcards.   Although renowned for their enormous steam presses for books, they did not have in place the specialist machinery needed to print the cards themselves, so contracted this out to the best firm in Germany.   Listed below you will see them listed under the printer’s number assigned to each set, either in black and white or in colour; no coloured cards of the Corn Exchange have yet been noted, although Set a359/303A appears to be set aside to fill this gap with numbers 42422-42427.   These are the only titles known and no further cards under the Unwin Bros imprint appear to have been published.
